How Much Feed Does a Dairy Cow Really Need Per Day?

How Much Feed Does a Dairy Cow Really Need Per Day?

One of the most common questions dairy farmers ask is: “Am I feeding my cows enough?”

The truth is that many dairy cows in Uganda produce less milk simply because they are underfed or poorly fed. A cow cannot produce milk from nothing, milk comes directly from the feed the cow eats.

Understanding how much feed a dairy cow needs each day can help farmers increase milk production, maintain healthy cows, and improve farm income.

Start with Quality Forage

The largest portion of a dairy cow’s diet should be forage. This includes pasture, hay, or maize silage.

For a mature dairy cow weighing about 400–500 kg, the general guideline is:

• 10–15 kg of maize silage per day, OR

• 8–12 kg of good quality hay, OR

• Enough fresh grass equivalent to these amounts.

Forage provides the energy and fibre that cows need for proper digestion and milk production.

However, forage alone may not be enough for cows producing a lot of milk.

Add Concentrates Based on Milk Production

Dairy cows producing higher amounts of milk require additional nutrients. This is where concentrates such as dairy meal or maize bran come in.

A simple guide many farmers use is:

1 kg of dairy meal for every 2–3 litres of milk produced.

For example:

• A cow producing 6 litres of milk may need about 2–3 kg of dairy meal.

• A cow producing 15 litres of milk may require about 5–6 kg of dairy meal.

Remember that concentrates work best when cows are already receiving good quality forage.

Do Not Forget Protein Sources

Milk production requires protein. If protein is lacking, cows may eat a lot but still produce little milk.

Farmers can add natural protein sources such as:

• Calliandra leaves

• Desmodium

• Lucerne (alfalfa)

• Legume hays

These feeds help improve milk production and maintain good body condition.

Provide Enough Clean Water

Water is often overlooked, yet it is the most important nutrient for milk production.

A lactating dairy cow may drink 60–100 litres of water per day, depending on the weather and milk yield.

If water is limited or dirty:

• Feed intake reduces

• Milk production drops quickly

Always ensure cows have constant access to clean drinking water.

Maintain a Consistent Feeding Routine

Cows perform best when feeding is consistent.

Good practices include:

• Feeding at the same time every day

• Dividing concentrates into two or three feedings

• Avoiding sudden changes in feed type

Consistency helps maintain good digestion and stable milk production.

Watch Your Cow’s Body Condition

Every farmer should regularly observe the condition of their cows.

Signs that a cow may not be getting enough feed include:

• Visible ribs and backbone

• Sudden drop in milk production

• Slow return to heat after calving

Well-fed cows appear healthy, active, and maintain steady milk production.

The Bottom Line

A dairy cow needs the right balance of forage, concentrates, protein, minerals, and water every day to produce milk efficiently.

In simple terms:

• Provide 10–15 kg of silage or quality forage daily

• Supplement with dairy meal based on milk production

• Add protein sources and minerals

• Ensure plenty of clean water

When cows receive proper feeding, farmers see better milk yields, healthier animals, and higher profits.
