1. Discover the problem before choosing the technology
Are workers spending too much time on repetitive tasks? Is equipment frequently breaking down? Are deliveries delayed? Is there a quality problem that better technology could address?
Start by identifying the actual difficulty.
A machine should be purchased because it solves a problem, not because it looks impressive on another farm.
2. Look beyond the purchase price
A machine may be affordable to buy but expensive to operate.
Consider electricity or fuel, servicing, spare parts, operator training, repairs and the availability of technicians.
An imported machine with no reliable local maintenance support can become an expensive decoration.
The real cost of technology includes keeping it useful.
3. Choose technology that fits your farm
A large automated system may work beautifully on a farm handling hundreds of animals but make little economic sense on a smaller enterprise.
Sometimes a simple improvement delivers more value than a sophisticated machine.
The right technology should match your farm's size, operating conditions, workforce and future plans.
Technology should grow with the enterprise, not overwhelm it.
4. Remember that technology also needs people
Even excellent equipment can disappoint when workers are not properly trained.
Before investing, establish who will operate the machine, who will maintain it and what happens when it stops working.
Invite the people who will use the equipment to participate in its evaluation.
Their practical experience may reveal challenges that a sales demonstration does not.
5. Test before committing
Where possible, visit a farm already using the technology.
Ask the owner what works, what regularly breaks down, how much maintenance costs and whether they would make the same investment again.
Explore demonstrations, equipment hire or service contracting before buying.
A practical test may save millions of shillings.
The Radiant Thought
Progress is not measured by how modern a farm looks, but by how wisely it works.
Innovation begins with curiosity. Good enterprise decisions turn that curiosity into practical improvement.
The future belongs not simply to farmers who adopt technology, but to those who learn how to use it purposefully.
One action this week
Identify one repetitive, costly or difficult activity on your dairy farm.
Ask three questions:
Could technology improve it? What would the improvement be worth? Can we test a solution before buying?
Start with the problem. Discover the possibilities. Invest with purpose.
