The Dry Season Dilemma: Your Path to Consistent Quality Forage Year-Round

Last year's particularly harsh dry season brought him to a crossroads. After watching his best dairy cow's milk production drop by half, he knew something had to change. The traditional approach of hoping for the best and scrambling when things got tough wasn't working anymore.

When we visited Paul, a dairy farmer in the sun-scorched area of Mbarara last year, the worry was evident in his voice. He confirmed how it felt like he was fighting a losing battle every dry season. Paul’s story is one shared by countless farmers across Uganda. As the rains disappear and the grasslands turn brown, the challenge of finding quality feeds becomes challenging. For dairy farmers, this isn’t just an inconvenience,  it’s a direct threat to their herds’ health and their incomes.

The True Cost of Seasonal Uncertainty

During our visit, Paul detailed his attempts to source feeds from the market. Often, the hay was of inconsistent quality or arrived too late, leaving his cows hungry. The cost of transportation only added to his woes. The challenges weren't just about the obvious lack of rain. They impacted every aspect of his farming operation. Low milk production, weight loss, and increased vulnerability to disease are just some of the struggles that dry seasons bring.

The Breaking Point

Last year's particularly harsh dry season brought him to a crossroads. After watching his best dairy cow's milk production drop by half, he knew something had to change. The traditional approach of hoping for the best and scrambling when things got tough wasn't working anymore.

Smart Strategy

Determined to help, we shared with Paul the importance of preparing ahead for the dry season.
To fill any gaps, Paul tapped into our growing network of forage retailers. With a retailer located in Mbarara, he’s able to source additional hay and maize silage without worrying about transport delays or huge costs.

Results That Speak Volumes

This dry season, Paul’s story took a different turn. Thanks to the smart strategy we implemented, his cows remained healthy, and milk production stayed consistent. Instead of watching his profits evaporate with the heat, Paul has been able to maintain and even grow his business.
